Quick Ways to Reduce Homeowners
You can save hundreds of dollars from your homeowner's premium by doing any of the following:
  • Purchase your policy from the same carrier from which you bought your home, car, boat, or umbrella policy to get a discount.
  • Do some comparison shopping. Call several insurers for quotes, always taking into account the reputation and stability of the carrier.
  • Check with the associations or clubs to which you belong to see if they offer group discounts with specific insurance carriers.
  • Consider paying a higher deductible.
  • Insure for the rebuilding costs of your home only, since you don't need to take into account the value of the land the house is built on.
  • Make sure your current insurer knows about the security measures you've taken to protect your home, such as alarms or theft deterrents. If you do not have deterrents to theft, get them installed.
  • Ask your current insurer about discounts for long-time customers or retirees.
But you should first make sure that your current level of coverage is adequate. Rising real estate costs, any improvements you have made, or expensive purchases, such as art or collectibles, may necessitate expanded coverage.
